There are seven plays in all O'Neill's work that include the word "fog". Among these, especially Fog, Anna Christie and Long Day's Journey into Night, are dotted with "fog". Originally, "fog" has been used in mysterious and ominous scenes by many writers. However, giving "fog" to his works to achieve dramatic effect, O'Neill opened his works to various interpretations. By analyzing both stage directions and speeches of the leading roles, Chris, Anna, Burke, I'll try to examine the significance of "fog" in Anna Christie and manifold structure of this play gained by playwright's giving not minosemic but interpretation to "fog". In this thesis, I will cross reference Fog, Long Day's Journey into Night.
