Atrophic neurons, homogeneously dense by cresyl violet staining, were counted in the coronal sections of the septa of normal Slc:Wistar and groggy mutant rats along with age. These neurons were observed in significantly large numbers in the septa of groggy rats at 60 and 120 days of age, as compared with age-matched Slc:Wistar rat groups. Electron microscopic observations of the septa of 60-day-old groggy rats revealed that the atrophic neurons displayed irregular and shrunken cell bodies, increased electron density in cytoplasmic and nuclear matrices, and swollen mitochondria and Golgi apparatus. However, large nucleoli were frequently present in the atrophic neurons displaying mild shrinkage, and no chromatin condensation was encountered in the nuclei. Moreover, normal-appearing synapses were found at the cell surface of the shrunken neurons. These results indicate that the atrophic neurons in the septa undergo necrotic degeneration rather than apoptotic cell death.
