The groggy rat is a single autosomal recessive mutant with a movement disorder, whose onset is about 15 days of age. The cerebellum, medulla oblongata and spinal cord of adult groggy rat are slightly atrophied. The present histological examinations of the spinal cord revealed that in the 360-day-old groggy rat, atrophy was restricted to white matter, whereas the transverse-sectional area of gray matter was not different from age-matched Slc : Wistar rat. The number of motor neurons in the lumber spinal cord did not differ between two rat groups. During postnatal growth of the spinal cord, a reduction in the transversesectional area of the whole spinal cord occurred in the groggy rat from 20 days of age onward. Light and electron microscopic studies revealed numerous degenerative myelinated axons in the dorsolateral funiculus of the spinal cord of 30-day-old groggy rat, but no discernible abnormalities were observed in the dorsal root. These findings suggest that the groggy rat may be an animal model of human autosomal recessive spinocerebellar degeneration.
