The Izu Peninsula situated between both Bays Sagami and Suruga is favored by high humidity and warm temperature under the influence of the Kuroshio Current of the Pacific. The highest annual rainfall of 3,500mm was observed on the ridges of Amagi-range which traverses the central part of the peninsula from west to east. The annual mean temperature attains 16℃ in the southwestern part of the peninsula and there is no frost even in the midwinter. Mt. Manzaburo, 1,407m alt., is the highest of the range in which many peaks exceeding 1,000m alt. stretch in a row. From ca. 800m alt. up to the summit, the range is covered mainly by the temperate deciduous broad-1eaved forest dominated by Fagus crenata and Stewartia monadelpha. Moss flora of this area is characterized by the temperate Holarctic and Asiatic-holarctic elements. Representative species of them are as follows : Andreaea rupestris var. fauriei, Bartramiopsis lescurii, Boulaya mittenii, Dicranum flagellare, D. hamulosum, Haplohymenium longinerve, Hylocomium himalayanum, H. splendens, Macromitrium prolongatum, Oncophorus wahlenbergii, Pogonatum contortum, Rhytidiadelphus subpinnatus, Trachycystis flagellaris, and T. immarginata. Three main rivers, Kawazugawa, Nishinagawa and Kanogawa rise among the peaks of the range and deep valleys are formed between 200-400m alt. in their upper parts. These valleys are covered by the warm-temperate evergreen broad-leaved forest dominated by Shiia sieboldii, Quercus glauca, Camellia japonica, etc. Moss flora of these valleys is characterized by the Paleotropical, Subtropical and Southern Japanese elements. Representative species of them are as follows : Aerobryum speciosum var. nipponicum, Barbella enervis, Bryhnia trichomitria, Chrysocladium retrorusm, Claopodium aciculum, C. assurgens, Cyathophorella hookeriana, C. kyusyuensis, Dendrocyathophorum paradoxum, Diphyscium involutum, Distichophyllum maibarae, Duthiella flaccida, Entodon conchophyllus, Eriopus japonicus, Fissidens doii, Floribundaria aurea ssp. nipponica, Homaliodendron exiguum, Glossadelphus ogatae, Lopidium nazeense, Meteorium buchanani ssp. helminthocladulum, M. subpolytrichum, Neckera flexiramea, N. konoi, Neacroporium flagelliferum, Orthomniopsis dilatata, Pogonatum spurio-cirratum, Pseudobarbella levieri, Plagiomnium succulentum, Rhacopilum aristatum, Rhizogonium badakense, Stokesiella arbuscula, Syrrhopodon japonicus, Thamnobryum plicatulum, and Theriotia lorifolia.
