Through a special collaborative research project (02-R-154) which took place from April 2002to March 2005 and was funded by Momoyama Gakuin University Research Institute, two majoroutcomes were achieved. First, a database comprising 87,366 companies within the south Osakaarea was established. Of this number, 5,600 were located in the city of Izumi. Second, welaunched a considerably wide-ranging business survey with the cooperation of "Jibashin", a localfoundation whose main aim is to promote the development of industry within the south Osakaarea.In this article, a brief outline of our activities and an explanation of the significance of conductingsuch a study are discussed. In addition, some results of our econometric analyses based on oursurvey data have been presented. Using the ordered probit model as a method of analysis, we discoveredthat the recovery of profit among businesses within the south Osaka area was solely dueto the expansion of sales in the previous five quarters. Given that most of the organizations thatparticipated in our study were relatively small businesses, we make the conjecture that the processof a demand-oriented recovery has begun to take place in our local regional economy and suchrecovery is not restricted to large businesses.
