Influence of Reflection Coefficients of RF Filters to Performance of Power Amplifiers and their Suppression Using Quadrature Hybrids

This paper discusses how the reflection coefficients (S_<ii>) of RF filters influence the performance of RF power amplifiers (PAs) and its suppression. A Class AB PA is designed, and the effect of the filter characteristics on the power-added efficiency (PAE) and output power (P_<out>) is investigated by simulation. It is shown that PAE is considerably deteriorated by S_<11> when the PA output is nearly saturated and the nonlinearity becomes significant. Influence of the filter impedance at harmonic frequencies are also discussed. Then a simple technique for the S_<ii> suppression is proposed, and its effectiveness is verified both theoretically and experimentally.
