High-quality hardware-accelerated lighting and shading has attracted a growing amount of interest in the last few years. Several functional representation techniques have been introduced to approximate Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Functions (BRDF) with acceptable quality for computer graphics applications. Most criticism of these techniques concerns their lack of efficiency for real-time rendering. Koenderink et al. have looked at representing BRDFs in terms of Zernike polynomials, which form an orthonormal basis of functions on the unit disk. In this paper we explore the possibility of representing BRDFs in terms of Zernike polynomials, with acceptable quality and performance for real-time rendering, by using the commonly available computation capabilities of current graphics hardware.
