Ectoprotein kinase uses extracellular ATP as a cosubstrate, which can be released from the cytoplasm of several cell types including neurons, and phosphorylates not only extracellular proteins but also membrane-bound proteins such as neuroglycan C, a brain-specific transmembrane chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan. Several ectoprotein kinase activities have been characterized, and implicated in a number of biological phenomena such as cell adhesion, Ca^<2+> influx, neurotransmitter uptake, synaptogenesis, neurite outgrowth, synaptic plasticity, and long-term potentiation. The ectoprotein kinase activity in the nervous system is now considered to be a potent regulatory mechanism of protein phosphorylation which is operative in the modulation of the extracellular environment of the nervous system.
