Measurements were made of the electrical resistivity, thermal conductivity and mechanical strength of singlet-ground-state compounds of Pr; PrCu6, PrNi5, PrPt5 and PrIn3, in connection with their use for nuclear refrigeration. The composition dependences of these quantities were also studied in nonstoichiometric alloys of these materials. It was found that, except for Pr–Ni alloys, alloys containing partner metals in excess of stoichiometry has larger conductivity and mechanical strength than the stoichiometric compounds. In Pr–Ni alloys with compositions close to PrNi5, an anomalous behavior of conductivities was observed at low temperatures. Using these results, the advantages and disadvantages of the above compounds and alloys as nuclear refrigerants are discussed from the technical viewpoint.
