An improved mass spectrometer for the analysis of very heavy molecules is proposed. It consists of a 60° sector magnetic field, a 90° toroidal electric field and a pair of electric quadrupole lenses. Stigmatic double focusing is achieved and second order image aberrations are corrected. A resolving power of 5000 at M=5000 is expected with a fairly small mass spectrometer (r_m=25 cm) with sufficient sensitivity (source slit width 0.15 mm). The narrow magnet gap (4.5 mm) is advantageous for analysing heavy molecules.
