One aim of recent ultrasonic tissue characterization is the quantitative imaging of tissue acoustic parameters. In order to obtain a straightforward image of physical constants the range-variant acoustic field characteristics, such as grating lobe, prefocused beam and diffraction effect due to the finite aperture on the array transducer have to be corrected. We propose 3-dimensional range-variant Gaussian shaped inverse filtering by digital signal processing of complex echoes as a means of correcting these characteristics in the near-field range of an ordinary array transducer.
