Scirpus juncoides Roxb. var, hotarui Ohwi, S. juncaides Roxb. var. ohwianus T. Koyama and S. wallichii Nees collected at a paddy field in our Fukuchiyama Experiment Farm were compared morphologically and physiologically, and the effect of TH 63, a granular formulation of the mixture of 4. 4 % (w/w) piperophos, 1.1 % (w/w) dimethametryn and 10.0 % (w/w) bentazon, on them were examined. 1. S. juncoides Roxb. var. hotarui Ohwi The number of stems increased as fast as that of S. wallichii, but the times of heading and flow-@ering were the latest. The stem was as long as that of S. juncoides var. ohwianus and the diameter was as thin as that of S. wallichii, but the bract was shorter than those of others. The number of spikelets per stem was fewer than those of others, 1.0 on the average, and all the flowers had 3 stigmas. The germination rate of the seeds reserved under the same condition as the case of other Scirpus was 74 % on wet filter paper at 30±1 ℃ for 14 days. 2. S. juncoides Roxb. var. ohwianus T. Koyama Increment of stem number of the 3 types was later than those of S. juncoides var. hotarui and S. wallichii, but the times of heading and flowering were different among 3 types. The stems of the 3 types were longer than that of S. wdllichii, and these diameters were thicker than those of others. The numbers of spikelets per stem of each type were more than those of others, 4.3~5.1 on the average. The rate of flowers with 2 or 3 stigmas was different among 3 types. The rates of flowers with 2 stigmas of each type were 70, 33 and 15 % respectively. The germination rates were less than 43 %, and especially one type did not germinate at all during 14 days after bedding. 3. S. wallichii Nees The stems of the 2 types increased in the number as fast as that of S. juncoides var. hotarui, but the times of heading and flowering were faster than that of S. juncoides var. hotarui. The stems were thin and short, but the bracts were long, about half of the stem length. The numbers of spikelets per stem were 3.4 and 3.7 respectively, and the spikelets were slender. More than 88 % flowers had 2 stigmas. The germination rates were high, especially one type attained to 99 % 4. These properties of each Scirpus were hereditary. 5. The effect of a herbicide, TH 63 on them was excellent at both pre- and post-emergence applications.
