The vibrational Raman spectra of a model bimembrane (DPPC) was used to probe its structural characteristics in the respective phases under high pressure. The frequency shift, band width and relative peak height (containing both intra-chain and infer-chain order parameters) of the respective Raman bands were measured as a function of temperature with the following results: the structure below the 4th-transition temperature is reconfirmed as orthorhombic PE-type packing with all-trans chains. At the 4th-transition point, intra-chain and inter-chain disorderings clearly occur. Around the sub-transition, abnormality of the Raman spectra accompanied by a movement of the head group equivalent to a melting-like behavior (observed by WAXS) occurs. Above about 2.5 kbar (the tricritical point) in the pre-transition line, continuous structural changes are observed as the temperature increases through the pre-point in place of the discontinuous changes observed below about 2.5 kbar.
