The structural changes accompanying the respective transitions of hydrated synthetic dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine under high pressure have been studied using WAXS and SAXS methods. The following experimental facts were observed: Under high pressure above about 2.5 kbar, the unknown phase below the sub-transition temperature exhibits the complete orthorhombic structure in hydrocarbon-chain packing; however, below about 2.5 kbar, the quasi-orthorhombic and orthorhombic structures coexist when the sample has an annealing history. At this sub-transition under high-pressure transformation from the unknown phase to the L_<β'> phase, a melting-like-process concerning the movement of head groups of the lipid takes place. The difference between the conformational changes above and below about 2.5 kbar at the pre-transition comes from the existence of the tricritical point at approx. 2.5 kbar and 78℃ in the pre-transition line.
