Copper halide luminescence was measured when CuBr heated at 500 K was vaporized into oxygen discharge flow in the absence and presence of chlorine (Cl_2). With a slight Cl_2 addition, emission peaks for CuCl transitions were detected instead of the CuBr transitions. As Cl_2 was added in the range of 0.24-6.7 mmol/min, the blue luminescence for CuCl transitions was gradually changed to a red color for the CuCl_2 transition. Evidence of the excitation process for CuBr and CuCl_2 was shown by the observation of NO_2 chemiluminescence and O_2(^1Δ) emission in the discharged flow. The results indicated that atomic oxygen and singlet oxygen species are responsible for the excitation of CuBr and CuCl_2, respectively.
