Effects of Alkaline-Earth Elements on Refractive Index Profile and Domain Inversion of Rb-Exchanged Waveguide in KTiOPO_4

The effects of alkaline-earth elements such as Ca, Sr and Ba on refractive-index profile and domain inversion of a Rb-exchanged waveguide in KTiOPO_4 have been studied. The waveguide depth estimated from refractive-index profile increased with ion-exchange time in a Rb/Ba-exchanged waveguide, while Rb/Sr- and Rb/Ca-exchanged waveguides showed no difference in the waveguide depth with increasing ion-exchange time of over 15 min. Domain inversion due to the replacement of K by Rb/Sr was demonstrated for the first time through selective etching. In addition, second harmonic generation was observed from a periodically segmented waveguide fabricated by ion exchange of Rb/Sr for K. However, the replacement of K by Rb/Ca did not cause domain inversion.
