Electrochemical deionization of an electrolyte solution in a micro-cell was accomplished by using an electrode coated with polypyrrole (PPy) having anion-capturing ability and an electrode coated with PPy having cation-capturing ability. The change in the ionic conductivity of the cell during electrolysis was simultaneously observed with a separate pair of bare electrodes. This cell system simulates the synaptic plasticity observed in the connection between neurons, where the efficiency of the signal transmission changes as a function of the frequency of the stimulus signal. We call this cell system an "electrically plastic device". In addition, we constructed and studied a cell system with a summation function which was produced by dividing the PPy electrodes into three separate electrode.
