Video Tracking of a Fatigue Crack with a Long Distance Microscope

With a long distance microscope and a TV camera connected together, the area of the fatigue-crack tip is observed in real time in the present experiment. As the initiation and the propagation of the fatigue-crack are recorded on a video tape, we can obtain the information on the cracking process, that is to say, the number of fatigue cycles till crack initiation, crack growth rate, crack-opening displacement (COD) and so on. The most characteristic point is that the behavior of the crack growth can be monitored by a highly magnified image with the TV video camera, even if we are not engaged in the fatigue test.
