A compact linear electron transmission apparatus has been constructed for the measurement of the total electron-scattering cross section for various atoms and molecules. The transmitted electrons are analyzed without a retarding potential. The effective scattering path length of electrons in the apparatus can be evaluated from measured currents. As a test of this method, the total electron-scattering cross section for CH_4 has been measured in the energy range between 5 and 500 eV with a statistical uncertainty ≤5% for electrons below 250 eV and ≤7% for electrons above 250 eV. The results show E^<-1/2> dependence at lower energies and a steeper decline at higher energies.
