The area variation of merocyanine monolayers during the adsorption of brilliant green dye from the water subphase is investigated. A marked area expansion which depends on the surface pressure is observed. The experimental results demonstrate that the adsorption of water-soluble dyes to the monolayer can be controlled by choosing proper substituents of the dyes and the surface pressure of the monolayer.
