The surface smoothness and densification of the alumina containing 0.01-0.1 WT% SiLL_2 additive have been studies. The densification and grain growth are inhibited by SiO_2. The activation energy for sintering increases and the surface smoothness decreases with increasing SiO_2 content. The decreasing of the surface smoothness with SiO_2 occurs in initial sintering. The reduction of the surface smoothness is enhanced by the grain growth.
