The conductivity of a plastic foam with a square array of cylindrical cell gas is treated theoretically. Since the approximate formula obtained by Lord Rayleigh is applicable only for small values of the volume fraction λ of cell gas, we have developed a general theory of the conductivity of heat of such a plastic foam which will be valid in a wider range of λ. The effective conductivity of the plastic foam is shown to be a function of λ and σ, which is the ratio of the conductivity of the cell wall to that of the cell gas. In order to calculate the effective conductivity as functions of λ and σ, it is necessary to solve a system of linear equations in an infinite number of variables. The conductivity has been calculated approximately for various values of λ and σ with the electronic computer.
