Comparison of Efficiencies of Electrostatic Wave-Excitation by Far-Infrared Laser Beam and Ion Beam

Two methods for driving electrostatic waves in the magnetized, high temperature plasmas are compared theoretically for driven scattering measurements, i.e., one with a power-modulated far-infrared (FIR) laser beam and the other with a density modulated ion beam. The coupling coefficients relating the powers of these driving beams to the amplitudes of the excited wavesare derived. The FIR beam is shown to be more efficient than the ion beam. It is also shown that the incident FIR power required for the driven scattering can be drastically reduced when it is chosen equal to the driving FIR power for wave excitation.
