Longitudinal critical currents in ac fields at frequencies of 35, 50 and 100 Hz below 4000 Oe are studied experimentally. The specimen wire is superconducting Nb-60.2 at. %Ti-2.8 at. %Zr alloy of diameter 101 μm and length about 3 cm. Direct currents are supplied from zero to the critical value at sweep rates of 10 to 100 A/min in an external ac magnetic field. The wave memory system is used to observe both currents and fields. Longitudinal critical currents in ac fields are smaller than those in dc fields, and decrease monotonically as the field is raised. The transition from superconducting to normal state can occur at any instantaneous value of the magnetic field even in a very low field. This is due to an instability, such as flux flow.
