The Internal Bias of Be-Doped Rochelle Salt

Impurity effects on the polarization reversal in Rochelle salt have been investigated. When Be ions are introduced into the crystal, a double hysteresis loop is observed, indicating that an internal bias is formed in the crystal. The magnitude of the internal bias decreases exponentially with time; the time constant τ being given by an Arrhenius relation, τ=τ_0exp(E/kT). The internal bias can be eliminated by applying an ac field for a long time, and then the crystal shows the double or biased single loop depending on the domain structure. The origin of the internal bias is ascribed mainly to "polar anisotropy" produced by the interaction between spontaneous polarization and the impurity vacancy complexes, and the internal stress around the impurity is likely to play a subsidiary role.
