Excitation of low-frequency sound waves by optical irradiation is studied in solids. Samples act as acoustic resonant cavities. Intense acoustic impulses are produced in a transparent material. Two mechanisms, the thermal expansion and the photon pressure, are treated by taking account of the optical properties of the samples for the sound-wave generation by light.
