The intermediate signal theory of the microwave oscillation in avalanche diodes is presented. The formulae describing the oscillation characteristics are derived on the basis of this theory and compared with the experimental results obtained from germanium diodes having linearly graded junctions. It is found that calculations of the output power using the small signal impedance parameters with no aid of a computer are quite successful in predicting the critical magnitude of output power in the practical range of oscillation.
