The effects of the arc cathode on electrical characteristics of the MHD channel were investigated. Two experiments using a potassium-seeded argon gas were made: one was the applied field experiment at 1790°K and 1 atm, and the other was the preliminary generator experiment at 1850°K and 1 atm. In the applied field experiment, it was found that the cathode sheath resistance was decreased by two figures when the arc cathode was operated. In the generator experiment, the increment of the true generator current induced by the MHD effect became evident from the results of analysis by the use of an equivalent circuit.
