Since W.Froude^<)> introduced the concept of the effective wave slope in the theory of rolling motion of a ship among waves, many papers have been presented on this problem. Watanabe^<2)> obtained the wave forces act on the ship among gentle trochoidal waves under Froude-Kriloff's assumption and introduced the reduction coefficient γw for the effective wave slope when a ship is rolling among the beam sea. Although his theory does not include the effect of, so called, active resistance following Froude-Kriloff's assumption, it is well known that γw predicts phenomena fairly well. On the other hand S. Motora^<3)> showed the varidity of the concept of the effective wave slope experimentally. Recently, M. Bessho^<4,5)> deduced the wave forces act on the ship among waves by applying Haskind's theory and explained theoretically the reduction coefficient γ including the effect of active resistance. In the previous paper^<6)>, two dimensional problem on the effective wave slope in the rolling motion of a ship among waves is treated, theoretically and experimentally, that is, an expression for the reduction coefficent γ is presented according to Bessho's theoryi^<4,5)>, experimental methods to measure the coefficient γ are discussed, presented expression for γ is compared with Watanabe's expression^<2)> and then it is shown that Watanabe's expression for γ gives considerably good agreement with the γ which includes the effect of active resistance except some special cases. In this paper the expression for γ is expanded to three dimensional problem, calculated with the aid of the strip method and compared with Watanabe's γw and with the experimental results obtained by tank tests with several three dimensional ship models. Among the results obtained in this paper, it is shown that in the three dimensional problems, Watanabe's γw gives fairly good agreement with the γ which includes the effect of active resistance except when the center of gravity of a ship is up above the statical water plane, as well as in the two dimensional cases.
