Since W.Froude introduced the concept of the effective wave slope in the theory of rolling motion of a ship among waves, many papers have been presented on this problem. For practical purposes, it had been a general way to take the sub-surface which passes through the center of buoyancy of a ship as the effective wave before Y.Watanabe^<5)> treated this problem theoretically. Watanabe^<5)> obtained the wave forces act on the ship among gentle trochoidal waves under Froude-Kriloff's assumption and introduced the reduction coefficient γ for the effective wave slope when a ship is rolling among the beam sea. Then his theory does not include the effect of, so called, active resistance following Froude-Kriloff's assumption. But S.Motora^<8)> showed the varidity of the concept of the effective wave slope experimentally. Recently, M.Bessho^<6,7)> deduced the wave forces act on the ship among waves by applying Haskind's theory and explained theoretically the reduction coefficient γ including the effect of active resistance. In this paper, two dimensional problem on the effective wave slope in the rolling motion of a ship among waves is treated. At first, an expression for the reduction coefficient γ is presented according to Bessho's theory and the experimental methods to measure the reduction coefficient γ are discussed and then this expression for γ is compaired with Watanabe's expression and it is shown that Watanabe's expression for γ gives considerably good agreement with the γ which includes the effect of active resistance except some special cases. And then several two dimensional models are built and tested to obtain the coefficient γ, which is compared with the theoretical results.
