In Nagasaki Experimental Tank of Mitsubishi Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. Ltd., self-propulsion tests in rough water, investigating the rough water effects on propulsive performance, seaworthiness, pitching and heaving accelerations, etc., have been performed with more than 20 shipmodels since the spring of 1954 When the experimental tank was completely reconstructed from the World War destruction.It is the author's opinion that in rough water experiments, the self-propulsion test is much moreeasy and directly applicative than the resistance test, and that we should advance the former test without sticking to the latter.In present paper, the authors report on the results of the self-propulsion tests in rough water of 7 meter paraffin ship-models of three different forms of single-screw cargo ships. In these experiments, the authors used several new measuring instruments, for instance, the inductance type self-propulsion dynamometer, the electric wave height recorder, etc., which were especially designed and made for these tests by themselves. The three ship-models represent the three different shipforms, namely, normal form, bulbous bow form, and Maier form. The respective natural pitching period of the three is adjusted nearly equal.Comparing the experimental results about these three forms, there was no distinctive difference as they had expected. But the Maier form model showed the minimum in pitching and in augmented power in waves. The bulbous bow form model showed the maximum in bow pitching.
