The Japanese shipbuilding industry has achieved wide range of rationalization due to labor shortage and severe circumstances in economics. The effort for innovation must be directed first to reduction of production period and development of efficiency in operations. This paper describes successful examples of a shipyard production management regarding the beginning part of shipbuilding process. The authors, aproaching from an innovational viewpoint, have attained an improved procedure for scheduling and dispatching of steel materials, as well as a continuous flow-production system at marking, cutting and sub-assembing stages.
