The present authors investigated the characteristics of force acting on the structural elements of an anchor, such as fluke, shank, and stabilizing fins. On the basis of experiments and the theoretical consideration, stability coefficients were proposed [1] to evaluate the roll and pitch stability of the dragged anchor. In this paper, the stabilizing moment of the anchor rolled around its shank is investigated in detail for all rolling angle. As a result, it is shown that an anchor of absolute-roll-stability can be realized by attaching a pair of large plate-face stabilizing fins. In order to verify the proposed method [1] for calculating the maximum holding power of anchors, model tests were performed; and the data showed good agreement with the results of calculation.
