This study investigates three approaches for establishing the difficulty order of relative clause (RC) processing based on production tests administered to adult learners of English. The three approaches are: the Universal Operating Principle (Slobin 1973), the Parallel Function Hypothesis (Sheldon 1974) and the Accessibility Hierarchy (Keenan and Comrie 1977). In order to see which proposal is the best applicable to RC production, four types of RCs were examined in two kinds of elicitation tests and in one free composition test. Findings reveal that the Universal Operating Principle which distinguishes the center-embedded RCs from the right-embedded RCs is a primary determinant for learners attempting to produce RCs. In addition, the results also support interaction between the Universal Operating Principle and the Accessibility Hyl)othesis: both approaches interrelate with each other to provide possibilities for a more accurate determination of the difficulty order of RC processing.
