Learning Unknown Words : The Effects of Dictionary, Association, and Own Way Learning Strategies

This study examined learners' vocabulary learning strategies and effects of three types of vocabulary learning, i.e., learners' own ways (Own Way), mnemonic association (Association), and dictionary use (Dictionary), on immediate, short-term, and long-term retention. Thirty-one low-intermediate EFL learners were required to memorize three sets of unknown words, with 10 words in each set. The results indicated that 87% of the Own Way method was by rote learning, but after students received association guidance, non-rote learning increased by more than five times, and 46% was by keyword method. Immediate recalls of Own Way and Association demonstrated significantly higher scores than for Dictionary, implying that discovery of meaning may not necessarily contribute to vocabulary consolidation. For delayed recalls, Association showed significantly better retention than for Dictionary, suggesting the former's advantage for long-term effect.
