This study pursues the following three objectives: 1 . To review the properties of forTnulaic speech in child L1 and L2 Iearning. 2. To examine and possibly identify the relationships between formulaic speech and creative language. 3. To demonstrate by a case report the production of formulaic speech and the developmental stages to creative language . Many studies have claimed that formulaic speech plays a major role in early language acquisition. Formulaic speech employed by child L1 and L2 Iearners is considered to be due to their acute and increased need to use memorized units to facilitate interaction with a minimal linguistic competence. Two conflicting perspectives are discussed to investigate whether formulaic speech evolves into creative language. Since the Creative Construction Process claimed by Krashen and Scarcella (1978) Iacks decisive evidence, and since the present case study showed that the childfs mastery of English centered on the mastery of formulaic speech, it seems more valid to place an emphasis on the creative aspects of formulaic speech and to take the position that formulaic speech may evolre directly into creative language. Some suggestions abcut promoting communicative strategies in teaching are also given.
