C-banded karyotype and nucleolus organizer regions in a discus fish, Symphysodon aequifasciata axelrodi(Cichlidae, Perciformes)

C-banded karyotype and nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) in a discus fish, Symphysodon aequifasciata axelrodi (Cichlidae), were studied. The diploid chromosome number was 60 consisting of 13 pairs of metacentric, 13 pairs of submetacentric, and 4 pairs of subtelo- or acrocentric chromosomes, 8 pairs of which were very small but not supernumerary chromosomes. Centromeric C-bands found in most chromosomes, varied among chromosomes and were generally large in size. Some chromosomes had entirely C-banded short arms. A middle-sized submetacentric pair had NORs associated with the terminal regions of the short arms. One specimen showed an intraindividual variation of Ag-NORs.
