C-banded karyotype and nucleolus organizing regions (NORs) of a notopterid fish, Notopterus chitala (Osteoglossiformes), were studied. The diploid chromosome number was 42 and all were acrocentric. Secondary constriction (SC) was found in a small pair. C-bands were located in centromeric regions of all chromosomes. In addition, interstitial C-bands occurred in two pairs of the largest group and a small pair which had SC. Ag-NORs were located in the SC of the small pair. These findings suggest that tandem fusion rather than Robertsonian rearrangements may provide an important role in karyotype evolution in the Osteoglossiformes.
