Karyotypes and banded chromosomal features in two anemonefishes (Pomacentridae, Perciformes)

Karyotypes, C-band positive heterochromatin, and silver stained nucleolus organizer regions (Ag-NORs) were studied in two anemonefishes, Amphiprion clarkii and A. frenatus. Both species had the same diploid chromosome number (2n=48) and similar karyotypes with high fundamental numbers (86). However, chromosomal distribution of C-bands and Ag-NORs revealed species-specific differences that were useful in distinguishing their karyotypes. The results of C-banding and Ag-staining suggested that chromosomal changes have occurred during and/or after the speciation of these anemonefishes.
