Karyotype analyses of five wild rose species, Rosa chinensis Jacq. var. spontanea, R. gigantea Coll. ex Crep., R. moschata Herrm., R. multiflora Thunb. and R. wichurana Crep. belonging to septet A, were carried out on the basis of condensation patterns of the chromosomes, and rRNA loci were localized by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) using 45S and 5S rDNAs as probes. Seven pairs of chromosomes were discriminated in each rose species by their morphology and condensation patterns, and were designated as chromosome Nos. 1-7 in the order of their total lengths. Two 45S rDNA signals were detected in all of the species at the ends of the short arms of the shortest pair of chromosomes. Four 5S rDNA sites were detected in R. chinensis and R. wichurana, while three sites were found in R. gigantea, R. moschata and R. multiflora, indicating that chromosome polymorphisms are present among the rose species, even within the same section and/or septet.
