In shake-flask culture asymmetrin was produced by Penicillium thomii aud Byssochlamys nivea during autolysis. A bioassay was devised to estimate relative concentrations of this compound. Culture filtrates of P. thomii containing asymmetrin caused a decrease in wet weight, dry weight, and total nitrogen of Phaseolus vulgaris up to 18 days after treatment. At certain intervals after treatment with culture filtrate of B. nivea, respiration was inhibited, and changes were observed in isotope ratio values of plants supplied with glucose-^<14> C. Plants treated previously with culture filtrates of B. nivea responded but little to gibberellic acid. High concentrations of indoleacetic acid inhibited growth of control plants but stimulated growth of plants treated with culture filtrate of B. nivea.
