The ability of white light to inhibit malformin-induced abscission on cuttings of Phaseolus aureus involved a red-far red reversible phenomenon. Treatment with far red radiation prior to dark incubation enhanced abscission on both control and malformin-treated cuttings. The dark aging process, which enhances abscission on both control and malformin-treated cuttings, was inhibited by red radiation and was also far red reversible. The photoreceptor for light inhibition of malformin-induced abscission was located in the primary leaves. A role of phytochrome in the inhibition of abscission on control and malformin-treated cuttings is indicated.
