Hyphal wall components of Phytophthora infestans, the late blight fungus, induced rapid accumulation of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA reductase (HMGR) transcripts (mRNA) in potato tubers. The effects of protein synthesis inhibitors, blasticidin S and cycloheximide, on the gene transcription were examined. These inhibitors also induced PAL and HMGR transcript accumulation.
