Red light inhibited the growth of the apical part of the hook in dark-grown seedlings of a dwarf variety (cv. Progress No. 9) of pea (Pisum sativum L.), whereas it promoted such growth in a tall variety (cv. Alaska). In the elongation zone of the epicotyl of the dwarf variety the extent of inhibition of growth was similar to or even smaller than that in the tall variety. Local irradiation of the apical part of the hook also caused inhibition of growth in the hook of the dwarf variety and promotion of growth in the tall variety.
