The 3' flanking sequences of the coding regions of three wheat histone genes (one H3 and two H4 genes) were examined in an attempt to find signal sequences involved in regulating the transcription of the histone genes. A characteristic sequence, 5'(T)n(G)m--TG--AT3', was found in the vicinity of the region at which the 3' end of the wheat histone mRNA was mapped. This sequence was different from the polyadenylation signal or dyad symmetry structure that is common to animal histone genes.
