In a fern, Pteris vittata, inhibition by low-energy blue light of phytochrome-dependent spore germination was counteracted by anerobiosis and respiratory inhibitors, such as KCN and NaN_3. A 50% inhibition of spore germination in a medium containing 0.3 mM NaN_3 required about 8 times longer duration of blue light irradiation compared with the control. The counteracting effect of NaN_3 continued for about 32 hr after withdrawal of the inhibitor. However, NaN_3 neither induced dark germination nor counteracted the far-red light inhibition dfspore germination. Reducing agents and uncouplers were tested and dithionite and arsenate slightly reversed the blue light inhibition of spore germination.
