Benzyladenine-Enhanced Cell Proliferation and -Suppressed Greening in Attached Young Bean Leaves

Changes in fresh weight, cell number, cell size and cell constituents were studied during the growth of attached young bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) leaves after benzyl-adenine (BA) treatment. BA brought about the increase in DNA, RNA and protein contents and fresh weight as well as the temporary inhibition of chlorophyll accumulation in growing leaves. After a lag period for about 12 hr, BA stimulated cell division but not cell expansion. An increase in RNA content occurred during the lag period of BA-induced cell division growth.
