The sprouting of immature bulbils of Laportea bulbifera and partially dormant (in-sufficiently chilled) mature bulbils of L. bulbifera. Elatostema involucratum and E. umbellatum was promoted by inhibitors of nucleic acid and protein synthesis (8-azaguanine, 5-fluorouracil, 2-thiouracil, ethionine, canavanine sulfate, p-fluorophenylalanine and cycloheximide in Laportea and 5-fluorouracil, cycloheximide and chloramphenicol in Elatostema). However, the sprouting of nondormant (chilled) mature bulbils of L. bulbifera was not promoted, but slightly suppressed when these inhibitors (especially, 8-azaguanine, cycloheximide and chloramphenicol) were applied either during or after chilling treatment. These results suggest that the two counteracting systems, dormancy-inducing and -breaking which involve nucleic acid and protein synthesis participate in the dormancy regulation.
