Dormancy in bulbils of Laportea bulbifera was investigated using buds cultured in vitro. Buds excised from immature bulbils could sprout in light, but scarcely in the dark. Regardless of light conditions, buds isolated from mature bulbils failed to sprout while those from chilled mature bulbils could. GA and BA stimulated the sprouting of buds excised from dormant mature bulbils. In contrast, ABA and morphactin inhibited the sprouting of buds excised from nondormant chilled mature bulbils. These results suggest that, in dormant Laportea bulbils, the buds themselves are in a dormant state which may be controlled by a balance of activity between growth-inhibiting and -promoting substances.
