Five soluble cytochromes were isolated and were partially purified from Bryopsis maxima: Cytochrome b-562 is slightly autoxidizable and has a midpoint redox potential of + 175 mV at pH 7.0. Its molecular weight is close to 30,000 as estimated by dextran gel filtration. Cytochrome b-555 is autoxidizable and can be reduced by dithionite but not by ascorbate. Cytochrome c-549 is a basic protein. It is slightly autoxidizable and reducible with either ascorbate or dithionite. Cytochrome c-549(LP) is autoxidizable and reducible with dithionite but not with ascorbate. The reduced cytochrome combines with carbon monoxide. Cytochrome c-553 is the f-type one, which was reported by Sugimura et al. (1968).
